Argh, Pete, that's insane!

Sure, you might not want to use git or quilt, which would make that whole series of looney steps be as simple as:

$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/patches.git gregkh-patches
$ mkdir gregkh
$ cd gregkh
$ ketchup `cat ../gregkh-patches/version`
$ QUILT_PATCHES=../gregkh-patches quilt push -a
$ cd ..
$ cp -al gregkh gregkh-v

But please look into using ketchup, it saves oh so many keystrokes when generating the proper kernel tree for whatever you need.

If you just use ketchup, your fingers would thank you a small bit, and the learning curve for it is pretty much non-existant, compared to quilt or git.

Ouch, my fingers just hurt thinking about it...
